Quantum Computing

Quantum is an emerging sector in NSW, where quantum startups spun out from universities are attracting capital.

It is estimated by 2045, Australia's quantum technology industry could generate over $6 billion of revenue and over 19,400 new jobs. Australia's capability in quantum includes over 30 years of research. NSW's emerging quantum ecosystem is globally significant, with capabilities across the quantum stack.

NSW is the home of several leading quantum computing businesses. It's no coincidence these firms have spun out from NSW universities, where quantum research and development is a key strength.

Four NSW universities with leading quantum technology expertise have formed the Sydney Quantum Academy (SQA):

  • Macquarie University
  • University of New South Wales
  • University of Sydney
  • University of Technology Sydney

The SQA is unique, delivering postgraduate and industry-based education and training in quantum technologies. Its research strengthens NSW's quantum capabilities and develops the talent needed to support this growing industry.

NSW is also home to considerable research centres and facilities including:

  • ARC Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology (CQC2T)
  • Nodes of the ARC CoE for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS)
  • National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Scheme (NCRIS) facilities including nodes of the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF), Microscopy Australia
  • Newly announced Defence Trailblazer: Concept to Sovereign Capability (CSC), which includes quantum as a focus area
