NSW Innovation and Productivity Scorecards

The NSW Innovation and Productivity Scorecards provide a snapshot of NSW’s innovation and productivity performance in comparison to other states and selected international economies. The 2018 and 2019 Scorecards can be viewed either as PDFs or in Tableau, a data visualisation platform.

The unique scorecards provide internationally comparable data at the NSW level for the first time. Research has shown that innovation boosts productivity, and productivity leads to economic growth. Understanding the connections between these factors and measuring how well NSW is performing are crucial in evaluating ways of improving both innovation and productivity.

For the first time, we can see how NSW’s support for innovation compares to that of Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Singapore, the US, the UK, Australia, and the Australian states of Victoria and Queensland. Where data is available, we can also compare ourselves against the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average and the US states of Georgia and California.

The scorecard uses both traditional data sources and new metrics that are only possible through recent advances in data science technology. These new metrics, created in collaboration with CSIRO’s Data61, provide contemporary measures of innovation.

The IPC will now publish the Scorecard on a bi-annual basis, with the next Scorecard expected to be released in late 2021.
