NSW agrifood Nature's Basket India opportunity
Background
India will be the world’s third largest economy by 2030. It has a growing taste for international brands and better products. India’s food and beverage sector is one of its fastest growing. It is expected to grow by 11% per year until FY 2027.
Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA)External Link outlines new trade opportunities for NSW businesses and helps secure access to the fast-growing Indian market of over 1.4 billion people, focusing on the agribusiness and food and beverage sectors.
While food and beverage generate 3% of India’s GDP, it accounts for two-thirds of the retail market. Plant-based food and immunity-boosting products with natural ingredients, including organic, gluten-free, vegan, superfoods and protein-rich, fibre-rich, prebiotic, and probiotic products are becoming much more popular.
This presents a significant opportunity for NSW exporters, especially in the sub sectors, where there are tariff reductions or eliminations altogether.
About the opportunity
Investment NSW will work with Nature’s Basket, one of India's largest food and beverage retailers, to help businesses showcase their products across 20 stores in India. These include Mumbai and New Delhi.
This opportunity will help raise the profile of NSW’s produce and products in India, as well as give businesses opportunities to gauge consumer demand for their products, including aspects around pricing, packaging and flavour profiles.
About Nature's Basket
In 2005, Nature's BasketExternal Link launched as a single store. Today, Nature’s Basket is India’s largest gourmet retailer with over 34 stores across the country. Their purpose is to find and sell the best fruit and vegetables, real deli, the finest meat, top bakery, and more.
Nature's Basket also has a keen eye for food trends and diets. They recently launched stores in Mumbai and Kolkata, and plan to open more in the coming months.
Eligibility
- All NSW companies who are keen to introduce their agrifood food and beverage products into India
- NSW companies already exporting to India and keen to test appetite for new product offerings
- Going Global Export Program Food and Beverage to India current and past participant companies
- NSW companies with products in the categories listed below:
- wellness supplements, manuka honey and nutraceuticals products
- packaged and processed food with shelf life over 6 months
- lamb and seafood
- nuts and other horticultural products
- beverages
- wine and non-alcoholic wine and beer
- confectionary
- breakfast foods, including those with oats
- snacking items
- plant based milk and food.
