Why this market
As Australia’s strategic partnership with the US enters a new phase of growth, NSW businesses have significant opportunities to address expanding defence and private sector space industry needs in the US.
Recent developments that strengthen the long-standing collaboration in the space sector between Australia and the US include:
- The Technology Safeguards Agreement (TSA)External Link positions Australia as a prime global launch hub by enabling US space technology, such as rockets and satellites, to be launched from Australia.
- The Defence Trade Controls Amendment Act 2024External Link establishes a licence-free environment for AUKUS partners (Australia, the UK, and the US) and allows the transfer of certain Defence and Strategic Goods List (DSGL) items without the need for export permits.
Over 55% of the world’s space technology companies are based in the US. In 2023, the US Government allocated approximately US$73.2 billion to its space programs, making it the largest spender in the world, according to Statista Research Department.
