Key facts

The US is the world’s largest economy and one of Australia’s most important trade and investment partners. It is Australia’s largest investor, with $184 billion in total foreign direct investment at the end of 2021, and Australia’s second largest services export market ($8.4 billion).

NSW counts the US as its third largest two-way merchandise trading partner ($20.3 billion) and fifth largest merchandise export market ($4.4 billion).

Despite the key role the US economy plays for NSW, Canada and Latin America add enormous opportunities for both investment and trade with the region.

Opportunities to grow in NSW

  • There are significant opportunities for investment in NSW from the USA, Canada and other Latin American countries in the sectors of defence, aerospace, technology, medtech, life sciences, clean economy and resources, including critical minerals.
  • NSW has a large pool of talent in these sectors, and it’s growing. Our highly skilled workforce and entrepreneurial strengths turn fresh ideas into successful enterprises.

Export opportunities from NSW

  • A growing number of Latin American students are projected to study in Australia, including NSW as a leading study destination for students from countries such as Chile, Brazil and Colombia.
  • Business and consumer demand from the Americas, particularly the USA, holds great export opportunities in sectors such as agrifood, premium food and beverage.
  • In addition to Free Trade Agreements, Government partnerships can help facilitate priority access for NSW businesses looking to export to the Americas and accelerate market entry by companies from the North and Latin American markets into NSW. Examples of such partnerships are the NSW-California Sister State Agreement and the NSW-Denver Statement of Intent.
