NSW Innovation and Productivity Scorecards

Our unique scorecards provide a snapshot of the state's innovation and productivity performance.

About the IPC's Scorecards

The NSW Innovation and Productivity Scorecards provide policy makers and innovation ecosystem members a snapshot of NSW’s innovation and productivity performance in comparison to other states and selected international economies.

The unique scorecards provide internationally comparable data at the NSW level. Research has shown that innovation boosts productivity, and productivity leads to economic growth. Understanding the connections between these factors and measuring how well NSW is performing are crucial in evaluating ways of improving both innovation and productivity.

Comparing performance across economies and metrics

The scorecards show how NSW’s performance compares to that of Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Singapore, the US, the UK, Australia, and the Australian states of Victoria and Queensland. Where data is available, we also compare ourselves against the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average and the US states of Georgia and California.

The scorecards use both traditional data sources for standard metrics and contemporary metrics that are only possible through advances in data science technology. These contemporary metrics allow us to measure innovation in ways that the traditional data sources do not.

The 2022, 2019 and 2018 Scorecards can be viewed as PDFs. The 2019 and 2018 Scorecards can also be viewed in TableauExternal Link, a data visualisation platform.

Next steps - launching our digital scorecard

A new digital scorecard, enabling data to be presented in real time and greater user interactivity, will be released in 2024. The new digital scorecard will incorporate data from the previous scorecards, enabling improved tracking of performance over time, and include updated data where available.
